Ukrainian Minister Klimkin accused Russia of undermining confidence in the nuclear non-proliferation

He said this during his speech at 21-st Minister meeting in Basel.

Ukrainian Minister reminded that on December 5, 1994 Budapest memorandum had been signed. It had to give Ukraine safety guarantees due to its joining the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

Trust in this document, which ensured maintaining of security of Ukraine, its territorial integrity and political independence in exchange for voluntary abandonment of the country’s thirds world largest nuclear weapon arsenal in the world, has been destroyed this year by one of its signatories. This is Russia.

According to Minister Klimkin, Russian aggression against Ukraine led to illegal occupation and annexation of Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol and to escalation of conflict in Eastern Ukraine. It has not only violated territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine, it has also undermined and will further undermine European security system.

Previously we have reported that new Day of silence has been announced at the meeting o President Poroshenko with heads of law enforcement agencies. Day of silence is to begin on December 9.
