4 activists of ‘Spring’ [Vesna] movement installed the ‘monument’ on the Filed of Mars in Saint Petersburg next to graves to victims of revolution and civil war.
The inscription on the monument says ‘Unknown soldier died in Donbas during ‘peace’ time. We do not abandon our people, and these ones were not ours’.
In this way activists wanted to protest against recent decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin who had placed data about special missions of Russian Army in peace time on secret list.
Activists believe that this decree of the president is directly related to undeclared war in Ukraine.
They explained their actions in message released on the Internet: ‘Tomb of new Unknown soldier installed by ‘Vesna’ has to remind about hundreds and thousands of our compatriots who has been sent by Putin to war against Ukraine. People lie about them that they are on vacation, that they have resigned, but more and more facts say that Russian soldiers fight in Donbas. They come back with injuries or in coffins. Their graves are hidden, people don’t talk about them, their relatives lie that they have died during trainings for promises of compensations. Vladimir Putin is often credited with the phrase ‘We do not abandon our people’. But we have recorded the correct variant in our memorial: ‘And these were not ours’.
Activists summed up saying that Vladimir Putin is a war criminal and his place is on the dock of Hague Tribunal. ‘And there he will certainly be. If only fate of other dictators who fought against their people catches him up’ – the activists wrote.
