Ratification of Association Agreement

Summary of the most important events for September 16, 2014 by Dmytro Tymchuk

1. Verkhovna Rada and European Parliament simultaneously ratified the Association Agreement of Ukraine and European Union.

This is strategic victory of Ukraine. This is what Maidan began with. The way to this agreement became not only fight of ‘good vs evil’ inside Ukraine – the fight of good forces against Yanukovitch’s dictatorship, but also with an external aggressor. None of countries of the EU or its partners ever gave so much efforts (and lives of its sons) for its choice and for place in European family.

We all understand that the Agreement is not Ukraine in Europe yet. Revolution in minds hasn’t ended yet. Special thanks to Putin – with his aggression he pushed Ukrainian to EU much harder than any talks of democracy and European values altogether.

2. Again on the legislative initiative. With great effort Verkhovna Rada finally adopteb the long-suffering, but more than expected law on lustration.

The mass of deputies didn’t want to adopt the law on cleaning of government. Ordinary Ukrainians, those who care for the future of their country, were standing at Rada building. And speaker of the Parliament had to tell MPs that they wouldn’t be released form the room if they don’t adopt the bill.

That is interesting how effective this bill will appear. We all se today that merry fellows from regime of Yanukovich appear on high posts in government, the ones that licked Yanukovich’s boots yesterday. But the functioning of the bill depends on Ukrainian people, our community, it is good that we have it today.
