Creation of Ministry of Information Policy aroused a wave of discussion among journalists, society and MPs. Newly appointed minister of information policy Yuriy Stets tried to explain the aim of creation of another government agency during the round table ‘Does Ukraine need Ministry of truth?’ in Ukraine Media Crisis Center.
‘The chief task of Ministry of Information Policy will be creation of conception of information policy, approval of standards for TV and for professions in spheres of media, registration of mass media. During its existence Ukraine has not created conception of information policy of the state, it was not realized, so that one of department and one of deputy Ministers would deal with this topic – creation of strategy of information policy’, – explained Yuriy Stets during the round table discussion.
In addition, Ministry of Information will deal with establishing of communication between different public authorities.
According to the minister, the idea of creation of such state agency was borrowed from Britain, France and Israel. Draft of regulation on the Ministry presented during the round table was developed during 2007-2009. ‘The final version will be submitted to the Cabinet only after public discussion’, – Yuriy Stets added.
Deputies and journalists criticized the creation of this Ministry. ‘The very existence of such ministry puts freedom of speech in Ukraine under question. We have conducted small analysis and I can say that this structure existed under ruling of Saddam Hussein, it exists in Syria, Namibia, in states of Africa’, – says journalist of Hromadske.tv Anastasia Stanko.
According to journalist and blogger Sergiy Ivanov, creation of Ministry of Information Policy is an attempt to usurp of government and information space.
‘There have gathered people with different views of the one problem – information war against Ukraine. We have to put aside emotions, mutual insults and deal with the question constructively’, – said media expert Dmitriy Simanskiy.
