Decommunization in Ukraine – shake off the past

For a long period of time Ukraine has been trying to get read of its totalitarian past. The wave of Decommunization began in Western Ukraine and moved across country to Eastern Ukraine.

From late XX century Decommunization included:

  • Renaming settlements with communist names
  • ‘Leninopad’ – toppling of monuments to Vladimir Lenin across the country. Starting from 1990 more than 3750 (!) monuments were removed.

On April 9, 2015 Ukraine finally made a huge step to get rid of Soviet past by adopting four important Decommunization laws.
